Over 3,000 runners ran for peace this evening in Venice in the city trail organized by Venicemarathon, challenging prohibitive weather conditions

Venice, April 10, 2022 - Last night over 3000 runners chose to challenge polar temperatures and gusts of freezing wind to create the 6th CMP Venice Night Trail. A real test of endurance and courage, which made this edition memorable and consecrated its protagonists to real heroes.

The predictions on the eve of the day have been confirmed, with the third consecutive victory both for the Venetian athlete Nicolò Petrin, nicely renamed 'the flying baker' because of his profession that alternates with running training, and for the architecture student Sharon Giammetta, a promising middle-distance runner under the Biotekna Athletics.

The event started on time at 21 from Terminal 123 of the Marittima del Porto di Venezia, to the notes of the Italian Anthem and in the name of Peace, with the rainbow flag waved by the vice mayor of Venice Andrea Tomaello and by the president of Venicemarathon Piero Rosa Salva. A very long luminous snake then entered the darkness of the city, illuminating calli and campielli and enlivening the most evocative areas, with passages on the Calatrava bridge, in Piazza San Marco, on the Accademia bridge and at the Basilica della Salute.

The race immediately saw the trio made up of Petrin, Mattia Agugiaro and Andrea Paggiarin leave the group, the latter breaking away only in the last kilometer, when the Tornado athlete placed the extension right on the long final straight, closing his test in 59'44 "and 5 seconds off the athlete Vicentina Agugiaro (59'49").

“I am very happy to have secured the third consecutive victory - said Petrin - despite an annoyance on my side that tormented me a bit. So I drove a rather sparing race in the first part and only managed to stretch in the final. Among other things, I felt a little tired because I had been up since 3 in the morning due to my work in the bakery, and I couldn't sleep a wink in the afternoon. However, I could not miss this appointment which I particularly care about! ".

Agugiaro and Paggiarin also expressed words of strong appreciation at the finish line for this one-of-a-kind and very fascinating trail.

In the women's field, Sharon Giammetta dominated the race, winning in 1h05'18 ", eleventh place overall and almost seven minutes ahead of Chiara Fumagalli (1h12'16"). Third, Beatrice Urbani, who finished her test in 1h15’16 ".

"I felt a bit of difficulty at the beginning due to the strong wind, but then I managed to get into a good pace that I kept up to the end. The course is beautiful as always and this race remains one of my favorites ”- said Giammetta at the finish.

"The one that ran yesterday was an epic edition - says president Piero Rosa Salva - we had the demonstration that the great desire to be there and to participate prevailed over every difficulty. The event was also a tough test for us. In the early afternoon we were surprised by a tornado that swept away tents and inflatables and transformed a beautiful and warm sunny day into an afternoon of pouring rain and cold wind. We were prompt in implementing the emergency plan, using the large covered spaces of the port hub which became the welcoming 'refuge' of the competitors until a few minutes before departure. I do not hide that, given the intensity of the rain, at a certain point we also feared having to stop it, but then the improvement in conditions and the enthusiasm mixed with the courage that we perceived in the eyes of the runners have removed all doubts and today we are happy. to be able to say together with them 'we did it!'. I have to thank the Venicemarathon staff, the volunteers, the police and health workers who worked in very difficult conditions, the athletes who believed in us, but above all the Municipality of Venice, the Port Authority of Venice and all the sponsors. that allow us to realize this great event every year ".

The CMP Venice Night Trail was organized by Venicemarathon with the patronage of the Municipality of Venice, the Port System Authority of the Northern Adriatic Sea and promoted by CMP, the brand of the Campagnolo Brothers group. Sponsors of the event: Pro Action 'sport nutrition partner'; San Benedetto 'official water'; Bavaria 'official beer'; Alì Supermercati, the Paduan company of large-scale distribution; Dolci Palmisano, the traditional Venetian pastry since 1926 and Radio Deejay 'official radio'.

On Saturday, April 9, starting at 9 pm from the Port of Venice, the sixth edition of the CMP Venice Night Trail will be held in the name of Peace, with 5,000 runners and 39 foreign nations. Nicolò Petrin and Sharon Giammetta are ready to drop the trio of victories.

Venice, 8 April 2022 - The curtain officially rises on one of the most fascinating events in the world: the CMP Venice Night Trail, the night city trail organized by Venicemarathon.

In just over 24 hours, the calli and campielli of Venice will welcome the passage of 5,000 runners who with their headlamps, like many small dancing fireflies, will create a unique and very spectacular choreography for the public and participants. A very suggestive event, with a strong appeal also for foreign athletes. This year, 39 nations are represented and the countries with the highest number of members are in order: France, Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Hungary, United States, Switzerland and Slovenia.

The maritime area of the Port of Venice has been reconfirmed, and more precisely the Testata Marmi area and the Cruise Terminal 123, as the starting and arrival point of the event and the nerve center of the event, thanks to the collaboration with Venezia Terminal Passeggeri.

The departure is scheduled around 9 pm and will be organized in full compliance with the provisions that will be in force, following the protocols issued by the Italian Athletics Federation.

The spectacular CMP Venice Night Trail, which goes into the heart of Venice for 16 kilometers and along 51 bridges, will be manned by 300 volunteers. Among these, in addition to the precious support of the Local Police, the Fire Brigade and the Civil Protection, there will be the volunteers of the historical group of Venicemararhon, the Venicemarathon Running Team, the group “Quelli del Martedì” and the Radio Piovese Group.

The 6th CMP Venice Night Trail will also see the participation of Nicolò Petrin (28 years old), the Venetian athlete specialized in mountain running and color bearer of the Tornado Team and Sharon Giammetta (25 years old), the Trentino student, who lives and lives he trains in Mestre with the former Italian marathon athlete Giovanna Volpato. Both will try to collect their third victory, after those of 2019 and 2021.

Nicolò Petrin
Nicolò Petrin's day begins at two in the morning, when he leaves the house to go to the Borsetto bakery in Santa Maria di Sala (Ve). Nicolo is a baker by trade. A job that would seem to be badly reconciled with the life of an athlete, but not for him. The secret: “I like my job, because it is the family bakery and I don't mind having rhythms and habits a little different from the others. Together with my uncle and my cousins at night we make bread, pizzas and focaccia and when the day comes it is time to bake croissants and biscuits. I work from about 2 to 14, then I go to sleep. I wake up around 5pm, go to train, have dinner, and go to bed again and then start the day again, or rather, my night. I always take part in the Venice Night Trail very willingly, because I love running in my city, especially at night. I come from a period of form that has seen me win in all the races in which I have participated and tomorrow evening I would like to try to win for the third time in a row. Luckily, the bakery is closed on Sundays, so I can enjoy the post race without rushing to work ”.

Sharon Giammetta
Sharon Giammetta is struggling with her thesis, because in a few months she will graduate in Architecture in Venice. She comes from Arco (Tn), the middle distance runner of Atletica Biotekna, who alternates between track races on 1,500 and 5,000 and road races, for some years she has lived and trained in Mestre under the guidance of the former marathon blue Giovanna Volpato. “The Venice Night Trail is one of my favorite races. My first participation dates back to 2017, when I participated for fun in the non-competitive with some friends. In 2018, surprisingly, I managed to grab second place, to then win the 2019 and 2021 editions. Tomorrow evening I would like to file something at last year's time trial which was 1h04'40, while still trying to have fun ".

Curiosity Registered athletes

From here the athletes will go up the Fondamenta delle Zattere to the port area, along the Giudecca Canal.

"Thanks to the organizers who again this year, with great attention and not a few efforts, allow many athletes to run in a unique context and in complete safety. Given the sold out of registrations in a very short time, the event is confirmed as being of quality and in great demand by the sports world. See you on April 9 in Venice! ”- this is the comment of the Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Sport of the Municipality of Venice Andrea Tomaello.
"Since we are going through a period that is still uncertain from a health point of view - adds President Piero Rosa Salva - the exhaustion of the 5,000 seats available two months after the event was not taken for granted. This shows, once again, the charm and quality of our event. To the many runners who have trusted us again this year, I want to reiterate that we will guarantee the highest level of organization and health safety ".
